May 12, 2008
Freshman Corey Donohoe scored five goals to lead UNC women's lacrosse to a upset win on the road over fourth-seeded Virginia and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for May 5-11, 2008. The Jarrettsville, Md., native scored five goals in unseeded Carolina's 11-7 win at No. 4 seed Virginia in the NCAA Tournament first round on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va. Donohoe scored the last two goals of the first half to give the Tar Heels a 6-3 halftime lead after falling behind 3-0 in the game's first 5:06. She also scored the game's last two goals in the final seven minutes of the game, icing the win late and ending a late Cavalier comeback attempt. Other nominees: TAYLOR FOGLEMAN Fogleman went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to help lead the North Carolina men's tennis team to an NCAA regional championship with wins over South Carolina State 4-0 and Duke 4-2. Against the Bulldogs, Fogleman defeated David Grun 6-1, 6-2 to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead en route to the 4-0 victory. Fogleman was part of both clinching victories in UNC's win over Duke. He combined with Chris Kearney at No. 1 doubles for a 9-8 tiebreaker win that put the Heels up 1-0 in the match. Then, with UNC leading 3-2, he outlasted Alex Stone of Duke 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 5 singles to close out the match for the Heels 4-2. UNC is now 21-5 and will play Ole Miss Friday in the NCAA Sweet 16 at Tulsa, Okla. ROB WOOTEN Senior right-hander Rob Wooten made four appearances and combined for seven
shutout innings in a 4-1 week for No. 2 North Carolina but was at his best
in a shut-down performance against No. 24 Virginia Saturday. In the 5-2
series-clinching win, Wooten tossed career-long 4 2/3 innings to pick up his
fourth win of the season. He struck out a career-best seven batters, allowed
just two base runners and held the Cavaliers to just one hit, a ninth-inning
single. Wooten entered in a tight spot in the fifth inning, struck out two
batters on seven pitches and cruised from there. For the week, Wooten struck
out 11, while walking only one over four appearances against North Florida
and Virginia. Over 29 appearances, Wooten is 4-1 on the year with a 0.64 ERA
over 42 innings. He has struck out 50 and walked only 15.
