Dawson Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Rachel Dawson earned MVP honors in leading the field hockey team to the ACC championship and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for October 28-November 4. Dawson, a senior back/midfielder from Berlin, N.J., scored two goals, including the game-winner, as UNC beat Wake Forest 4-3 in overtime Sunday to claim the field hockey program's 16th Atlantic Coast Conference title. After a back-and-forth game, Dawson's penalty stroke in the 75th minute gave UNC the win and she was voted the tournament MVP. Named ACC Defensive Player of the Year earlier this week, Dawson also leads Carolina in goals with 18. Other Nominees HAKEEM NICKS Nicks had eight catches for 88 yards and a touchdown in Carolina's 16-13 victory over Maryland. It is the third straight game with at least eight receptions for Nicks, who moved into third-place on the UNC single-season chart with 56 receptions. His 30-yard touchdown in the third quarter proved to be the winning score. KELSEY MORRISSY Kelsey Morrissy was part of three 1st place finishes and three 2nd place finishes in UNC's dual meet at Minnesota. Her times in the 100 and 200 freestyles are both NCAA B standards for the 2008 NCAA Championships at 50.62 as she won the 100 and 1:48.90 as she finished second in the 200. Her 200 time equalled the 10th best time in school history and it shattered her previous personal best time by two and one-half seconds. She also swam on the victorious 200 free relay (NCAA B Standard) and anchored the 400 free relay which both won their events. She led the 800 free relay to a second place finish. Morissy time in the 100 free is the top time in the ACC this year as is her 1:48.90 in the 200 freestyle. RYAN FUNDERBURK Ryan Funderburk won both diving events in UNC's meet with Minnesota, qualifying for the 2008 NCAA Zone Diving Championships in the process. Funderburk won the 1-meter with a score of 357.98 and then rang up a first place finish in 3-meter springboard with 393.38. Funderburk's 393.38 tied the school record for points scored in a 3-meter dual meet competition CASEY NOGUEIRA Casey Nogueira scored with 30 seconds left in the first overtime period to lift the No. 4 Tar Heels to a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Virginia in a regular-season ending Top 10 match before over 3,700 fans at Fetzer Field. Nogueira's goal was her team-leading 11th of the season and her co-team-leading 4th game-winng goal of the season. Nogueira's goal gave the Tar Heels their eighth win in a row and lifted them to 15-3 overall and 9-1 in the ACC going into the ACC Tournament where the Heels will be the No. 1 seed. CHRISTINE VAUGHEN Sophomore Christine Vaughen led the Tar Heel volleyball team to three consecutive sweeps this past week over NC State, Boston College and Maryland. Vaughen finished off 32 kills during the week with a .518 hitting percentage as she committed just three errors in 56 total attacks. She improved her overall hitting percentage by 24 points (.328-.352) during the week while picking up kill totals of eight against NC State, 11 against Boston College and a week-high of 13 against Maryland. The Simi Valley, Calif. native is averaging 2.62 kills per game on the year and ranks fourth in the ACC with a .352 hitting percentage. BARDEN BERRY DAVID HOLZWORTH Barden Berry and David Holzworth led the Tar Heels to a fourth-place finish at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate Championship in Greensboro. Berry and Holzworth tied for fourth place in the individual race as both fired three-under-par 213 totals. Both players fired a one-under 71 in the final round. Berry fired an even par 72 in the first round followed by a two-under 70. Holzworth fired a three-under 69 in the second round after posting a 73 in the opening round. The Tar Heels finished in fourth place with an 870 total after rounds of
294-286-290. This was Carolina's final event of the fall campaign. The Tar
Heels open the spring season March 2-4 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in
Tallahassee, Fla.
