Dawson Named Progress Energy Tar Heel Of The Week

Oct. 1, 2007

Field hockey senior back/midfielder Rachel Dawson scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal and added an assist against fourth-ranked Wake Forest to earn Progress Energy Player of the Week honors for the week ending Sept. 30, 2007.

The top-ranked Tar Heels beat the Deacons 5-0 on Saturday to improve to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. The Berlin, N.J., native also scored a goal as the Tar Heels beat Davidson 8-0 on Thursday. Dawson leads the team in goals with 12 and also helps to anchor a defense that has earned seven consecutive shutouts.

Other nominee:

Brie Felnagle
Junior, Cross Country

Junior Brie Felnagle placed fourth at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon as she led the Tar Heels to a 10th place finish. Felnagle crossed the line at the 5K race in 16:48 just five seconds behind the second place runner and 16 seconds off the pace of the winner. The race was Felnagle's first of the season as she sat out the opening two races for further rest after a long push in the 2007 Outdoor Tracks season. Felnagle improved her time by 30 seconds from a year ago at the same event when she took 13th. Felnagle is looking to repeat as an all-America after a solid season in 2006.
