CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team kicked off its 2008 preseason Monday night with the annual Welcome Back Dinner. Players, parents and staff gathered at the Kenan Stadium North Box for pasta and chicken before practice opened on Tuesday.

The program welcomed six freshmen - Kelsey Brinkman, Taryn Gjurich, Lillie Lingo, Katie Plyler, Caitlin Van Sickle and Charlotte Verstraten - and the upperclassmen offered some advice. Dubbed the "Freshman 15", the tips were 15 things the newcomers should know, including such program truisms as "If you're on time, you're late" and the advice to go ahead and learn Hark the Sound as soon as possible.

Missing from the 23-player group was sophomore Katelyn Falgowski, who is competing at the Olympics in Beijing as part of the U.S. team. Just before UNC opened action on Tuesday morning, Falgowski and the U.S. squad tied Japan 1-1 in pool play.

Carolina, the 2007 NCAA and ACC Champion, opens the 2008 season Aug. 30 against Michigan in Winston-Salem, N.C., as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Tar Heels' first home game is Sept. 7 against Georgetown.
