Five Tar Heels Picked For All-ACC Academic Team
July 31, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Five North Carolina student-athletes have been named to the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Rowing Team, announced Thursday by league commissioner John D. Swofford. Sophomore Tar Heels Lindley Barrow (Wallace, N.C.), senior Lisy McIntee (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.), Kathryn Winz (Raleigh, N.C.), junior Katie Wood (Cornelius, N.C.) and junior Ruby Woodside (Natick, Mass.) are among the rowers honored. The 35 team members were selected from a pool of 148 nominees from the six conference schools that sponsor rowing--Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia. To be nominated for the ACC All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have recorded a minimum 3.0 grade point average in the spring semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA. McIntee is one of three All-America selections to also earn All-ACC Academic recognition. The others are Clemson's Suzanne Van Fleet and Virginia's Kelsie Chaudoin, a senior from Germantown, Tenn., who was named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for rowing. McIntee capped her senior year with second-team All-America honors for the second year in a row and is the first Tar Heel rower to earn All-America recognition twice in her career. Nine rowers, including McIntee and Woodside, were named to the squad for the second year in a row. The two Tar Heels also are among 10 student-athletes named to both the All-ACC and All-ACC Academic teams this year.
For the third consecutive year Virginia, which captured its ninth straight ACC Rowing title in 2008, led or tied for the lead among all schools, matching Clemson with eight selections each. Miami had seven honorees followed by North Carolina with five, Duke with four and Boston College with three.
