Calder Promoted To Associate Head Coach

Aug. 18, 2008

CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina's Andrew Calder has been promoted to associate head coach of women's basketball for the upcoming season, head coach Sylvia Hatchell announced Monday. Calder, who has been at Carolina for each of Hatchell's 22 seasons, previously held the title of assistant head coach. A native of McBee, S.C., Calder came to Chapel Hill after spending the 1985-86 season as a volunteer assistant for the University of South Carolina men's basketball team.

"I take great pleasure in offering Andrew this promotion," Hatchell said. "There is no doubt in my mind that he is the best assistant coach in the country. His knowledge of basketball and his commitment to me and to Carolina basketball is second to none. He has been by my side on the bench for 22 seasons and our program would not have had the success it has had without him. Andrew is vital to Carolina women's basketball and I look forward to many more years and many more championships coaching with him."

Under Hatchell and Calder, Carolina has become one of the nation's top women's basketball programs. The duo has led the UNC to eight of its record nine Atlantic Coast Conference championships and the 1994 NCAA title. The Tar Heels have won four consecutive ACC titles and have been a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons, winning 30 games in each of those campaigns.
