Larkins And Seager Named Progress Energy Performers Of The Week

March 3, 2008

Senior ACC Player of the Year candidate Erlana Larkins averaged 16 points in her final two Carmichael Auditorium wins over NC State and Duke and second baseman Kyle Seagar drove in 10 runs in four wins to share Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for February 26-March 2, 2008.

Larkins picked up her ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds as No. 2 UNC dealt No. 12 Duke its worst loss in 15 years Sunday. The 82-51 victory was the biggest win for Carolina over Duke since a 34-point win in 1982. Larkins also had a team-high 18 points in leading the Tar Heels to a win over NC State on Sunday. With the two wins, Carolina completed its first undefeated ACC regular season in school history.

Seager, a sophomore from Kannapolis, N.C., led Carolina to the Winthrop Coca-Cola Classic title with four straight multi-hit games and 10 RBI in an unbeaten weekend for the Tar Heels. For the week, the second baseman hit .444 (8-18) with four runs scored, two doubles, a home run and the 10 RBI. Seager drove in three runs in each of the first three games in Rock Hill, equaling a career high on each occasion. Thursday, he went 2-for-4 with his third home run and two runs scored; Friday, he went 2-for-5 with a double and two more runs scored; and Saturday, Seager tallied two-out hits in the first and third innings to drive in UNC's first three runs of the day. On the season, Seager is batting .387 (12-31) with team-bests of six extra-base hits and 14 RBI.

Other nominees:

WALTER HENNING
Track & Field, Throws
Freshman, Kings Park, N.Y.

Freshman Walter Henning earned the first ACC title of his career on the opening day of competition when he claimed the weight throw. Henning tallied the best mark of his young career and earned a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships in two weeks with a throw of 71'0.25" for the win. The toss was more than 11 feet further than the next closest finisher and currently ranks as the fifth-best in the nation. The freshman would later chip in two more points for the Tar Heels as he finished seventh in the shot put with a mark of 54'6.5".

GRANT ZIMMERMAN
Men's Lacrosse, Goalkeeper
Redshirt Junior, Cockeysville, Md.

Zimmerman made 15 saves and allowed only eight goals in No. 7-ranked North Carolina's 13-8 win over No. 5-ranked Cornell Sunday in men's lacrosse action at Fetzer Field. Despite being outshot by the Big Red 51-34, Zimmerman kept Cornell at bay most of the afternoon as the Tar Heels built a 6-1 lead and never looked back. UNC, led by Zimmerman's goalkeeping, handed Cornell its first regular-season loss since April 11, 2006 and only its third loss in its last 23 games overall.

RYAN FUNDERBURK

Senior, Summerfield, N.C.

Funderburk was one of three Tar Heels to final in three events at the ACC Championships, taking one third place and two fifth place finishes in men's diving.
