Green And Larkins Named Progress Energy Performers Of The Week

Erlana Larkins earned MVP honors at the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament and Danny Green had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots in leading UNC to a win at Duke to clinch the ACC men's regular-season title and share Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for March 3-9, 2008.

Larkins, a senior from Riviera Beach, Fla., led UNC to its fourth consecutive ACC title. Larkins averaged 18.7 points and 11.0 rebounds in three wins, including a team-high 17 points in the win over No. 12 Duke in the final. Larkins had double-doubles in both the quarterfinal win over Clemson (25 points, 10 rebounds) and the semifinal win over No. 25 Virginia (14 points, 15 rebounds). The tournament win completed the first undefeated run through conference play in school history.

Green, a junior from North Babylon, N.Y., led all scorers on both teams with 18 points in the battle for first place in the regular season at Duke. Had a career high seven blocked shots, grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals. Made 8 of 14 from the floor, including 2 of 4 from three-point range. Scored 14 of his points in the first half as Carolina built a 14-point lead, then scored the final four points of the game that sealed the win. He also scored 12 points and had seven rebounds and four assists in the 90-77 win over Florida State in the regular season home finale.

Grant Zimmerman had career highs for saves, ground balls and save percentage in a game as the Tar Heels beat No. 5-ranked Notre Dame 8-6 Saturday at Fetzer Field. Zimmerman faced 41 shots as the Fighting Irish outshot the Tar Heels 41-29 but he allowed only six goals (three when the Tar Heels were a man-down) while making 18 saves. The 18 saves were a career high, topping the 15 he had last year against Johns Hopkins and Virginia and the 15 he had last Sunday against Cornell. Zimmerman's eight ground balls matched his career high of eight versus Johns Hopkins last year. His .750 save percentage in the game was also a career best. Zimmerman shut out the Fighting Irish in the first half, making seven saves as UNC built a 4-0 lead. In the second half, Zimmerman went on to make 11 more saves (eight in the third quarter) as Notre Dame outshot the Heels 26-12 in the final 30 minutes. Zimmerman improved his save percentage on the season to .700 during the win.

COREY DONOHOE
Women's Lacrosse, Attacker
Freshman, Jarrettsville, Md.

The freshman attacker scored three second-half goals in the second half to help break open a close game and give the eighth-ranked Tar Heels a 12-5 win over 11th-ranked Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon. Donohoe leads Carolina with 17 goals and 19 points this season.

TIM FEDROFF
Baseball, Right Field
Sophomore, Flagtown, N.J.

From his leadoff position, right fielder Tim Fedroff jump-started the Carolina offense in a 3-1 week. He hit .611 (11-18) and had three three-hit games on the week. The Flagtown, N.J., native belted two home runs, drove in four runs and scored five more. He also slugged 1.000 on the week. In Tuesday's win over William & Mary, Fedroff was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a homer. He added three-hit games in games one and three of the Duke series. In Sunday's series-clincher, he was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base. On the season, Fedroff is batting .327 with a team-high four home runs, 14 runs scored and nine RBI.

JUSTIN DOBIES
Wrestling, Heavyweight
Junior, Garfield Heights, Ohio

Justin Dobies, who moved up from 184 pounds to heavyweight prior to this season, won his first ACC title with a 4-3 win over No. 2 seed David Marone of Virginia Tech to punch a ticket to this month's NCAA Championships. The Garfield Heights, Ohio, native reached his first league final with a first-period pin of Virginia's Jack Danilkowicz in 2:10 in the opening round and a 5-2 decision over Maryland's Pat Gilmore in the semis. The 20th-ranked Dobies is 29-6 with a team-best seven pins on the season.

KEVIN O'CONNELL
Men's Golf
Freshman, Cary, N.C.

Kevin O'Connell tied for third place at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla., the first event of the spring campaign for the men's golf team. O'Connell fired a six-under-par 66 in the second round, a round that featured six birdies and no bogies. That 66 was sandwiched in between a pair of even-par 72s in the first and final rounds. O'Connell's six-under 210 total was four strokes behind champion Jon Curran of Vanderbilt who carded a 10-under 206.

The Tar Heels finished in fourth place in the team race with a three-over-par 867 total with rounds of 290-287-290.

SYDNEY CRANE
Women's Golf
Junior, Jamestown, N.C.

Sydney Crane tied for fifth place at the SJSU Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Calif., the highest finish of her collegiate career. Crane fired a one-over-par 73 in the final round after carding 75-76 in the first two rounds. Her eight-over 224 total was just six strokes behind champion Selanee' Henderson of UC Irvine who posted a two-over 218 total.

The Tar Heels finished in sixth place with a 915 total after posting rounds of 305-304-306.
