Carolina Set For Cross Country Regional Action
Nov. 8, 2007
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina cross country teams are wrapping up their preparations for the NCAA Southeast Regional set for Saturday, Nov. 10 at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. The No. 26th-ranked women's team enters the regional ranked second overall after its fourth place showing at the ACC Championships on Oct. 27. The women are looking to advance to the NCAA National Championships in Terra Haute, Ind. for the 10th consecutive season and looking to improve on their sixth place showing in last year's regional. The Tar Heels enter Saturday's race with two of the top 10 runners in the ACC as both Brie Felnagle (third place) and Megan Kaltenbach (10th place) earned All-ACC honors for their efforts. Felnagle is looking to garner her third consecutive All-Region honors after finishing 17th as a freshman and ninth a year ago as a sophomore. Carolina finished just 14 points behind the top team in the region, NC State, at the ACC Championships.
On the men's side, Carolina has an outside chance at making it to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1991. The Tar Heels would have to finish as one of the top two teams in the regional after dropping out of the latest regional rankings. Alex Ray will look to continue his solid season in Louisville as he has led the Tar Heels in every race. Ray finished 22nd at the ACC Championships, the best showing of his collegiate career at ACCs. The men finished 11th a year ago in failing to secure a spot in the 31 team field at the NCAA Championships.
