UNC Sets Three School Records, Post Five Personal Bests At U.S. Open

Aug. 2, 2008

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.--The North Carolina swimming program concluded the 2008 U.S. Open with its best night of swimming Saturday night at the University of Minnesota's Aquatics Center with Whitney Sprague, Erika Acuff Erndl and Tyler Harris all setting University long course records and Joe Kinderwater and Wil Singley both establishing career best times in their events.

Senior Whitney Sprague of Bronxville, N.Y., 2001 alumna Erika Acuff Erndl and sophomore Tyler Harris of Richmond, Va., all shattered their own existing school long course records.

Sprague swam a 16:35.65 in the timed final of the women's 1500-meter freestyle to finish fifth in the event. Her time clipped her existing school mark of 16:35.82 set at the 2007 Charlotte UltraSwim.

Erndl bounced back from her morning swim to take 2.67 seconds off her time in the "B" final. Erndl's time in the 200-meter individual medley was 2:18.72, good for 17th in prelims. After a swimmer scratched from the "B" final, Erndl moved into that heat in the evening and finished 10th in 2:16.05. That broke her own school record of 2:17.36 set at the 2008 Olympic Trials earlier this summer.

Incoming freshman Layne Brodie also swam the 200-meter IM and finished 52nd in 2:23.71.

In the men's 200-meter individual medley, Harris qualified 11th in the preliminaries with a time of 2:04.39, breaking his own school mark of 2:05.89 set at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. In the evening, Harris placed 14th in a time of 2:04.75, still over a second better than his old school record.

Sophomore Andy Brake also swam the 200-meter IM and placed 44th in 2:09.08.

Carolina had two swimmers set career best in the timed finals of the men's 800-meter freestyle. Sophomore Joe Kinderwater of Lancaster, Pa., improved two spots upon his seed by taking fourth in 8:06.78. That was more than three seconds faster than his previous career mark of 8:10.10.

Incoming freshman Wil Singley improved seven spots on his seeded position by taking 18th in the 800-meter free at 8:18.20. Singley's previous career best time was 8:21.79.
