General: A 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials finalist in the 1500-meter freestyle...heads into the season as Carolina's top returning performer in the 1000 free at 8:58.09 and the 1650 free at 14:53.57...a returning letterman who was one of the nation's top distance freestylers coming out of the high school ranks in 2006-07 and then turned in a phenomenal freshman year for the Tar Heels.

Long Course Highlights: Qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 1500-meter freestyle...finished eighth in the event with a new career best time of 15:21.84... finished fifth in the 1500-meter freestyle at the 2008 U.S. Open with a time of 15:23.26...took fourth in the 800-meter freestyle at the U.S. Open with a time of 8:06.78, a new career best...was a finalist in two events at the 2007 U.S. Swimming summer nationals, placing seventh in the 1500-meter freestyle and 12th in the 800-meter freestyle.

Open Water Highlights: Earned honors on the U.S. National Open Water Swimming Team for the second straight year based upon his performance at the 2008 U.S. Open Water Championships in Minneapolis...had a third place finish with a time just under two hours in the 10k event...finished third in the 2007 U.S. 10k Open Water Swimming World Championship Trials...that earned him a spot to compete in the 2008 Open Water World Championships in Seville, Spain in the 5k race... finished 15th in the 2008 FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships in Spain in the 5k event with a time of 55 minutes and 21 seconds...his time was just 23.7 seconds behind the champion...was the ninth place finisher in the spring of 2007 in the 5k event at the U.S. Championships.

2007-08 (Freshman): The ACC champion in the 1650-yard freestyle event...fifth-place finisher in the 1650-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships...set career best times in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:24.12 and in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 14:53.57 at the NCAA Championships...set a career best in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 8:58.09 in the dual meet against Virginia...his times in the 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyles both set school records...named the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week for two straight weeks in January after winning two events against both Clemson and Virginia in dual meet action...those honors came on January 15 and 22, 2008, respectively...honored by CollegeSwimming.com as the National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week (NCSW) for two straight weeks as determined by a panel of collegiate coaches (January 16 and January 23, 2008)...was selected as the UNC Progress Energy Performer of the Week after setting two career bests and winning two events in the Tar Heels' first dual-meet victory against Virginia in 10 years...earned ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week honors for a third time on February 5, 2008 after earning a pair of first-place finishes in dual meets against NC State, Johns Hopkins and Emory...he and fellow Tar Heel Kelsey Morrissy were the only student-athletes in the ACC to receive the weekly conference honor three times each in 2007-08...finished fifth at the ACC Championships in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:24.41...his title-earning time of 14:57.78 at the ACC Championships helped lead the Tar Heels claim second place in the team standings, their best finish since 2001...that time also qualified him for the 2008 NCAA Championships...he was one of three Tar Heels to win a title at the ACC meet...earned first-team All-ACC honors...placed fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships, the highest individual finish for a Tar Heel at the NCAA meet since 1993...honored as an All-America, one of three Tar Heels to receive the honor, the most for Carolina since 2004... received the team's Richard E.
